Meet the Team
Éowyn Campbell
ResearcherWater researcher and post-secondary teaching specialist with expertise in surface water-groundwater connectivity and sustainable water supply in Canadian river systems through the lens of hydrogeochemistry. Her additional research interests include the legal interfaces of water, law, and supporting indigenous information sovereignty.
Éowyn’s teaching and learning focus is on equity, diversity, and inclusion in course and curriculum development, and how practical metacognition tools support learning, autonomy, and inclusiveness in course design.
Justin
Nnokwe
ResearcherUniversity lecturer, researcher, data analyst, and program facilitator. His scientific research and collaborative publications focus on biological sciences, environmental microbiology, phytochemical screening, heavy metal bioaccumulation, and antimicrobial properties of traditional medicinal plants.
Shuai
Xu
ResearcherShuai is a GIS & Remote Sensing Analyst, geospatial researcher, and Environmental Impact Assessment Technician specializing in spatial analysis, environmental mapping, spatial data management, field GIS, and front-end development. His work focuses on integrating field observations, environmental datasets, and place-based knowledge through GIS workflows and interactive visualization products.
His broader interests include supporting Indigenous Science, landscape change, suitability modelling,
Lily Yumagulova
ResearcherA Bashkir woman and an immigrant and settler in Canada. Lily’s academic and professional background includes emergency management, a Masters of Science in Risk Analysis (King’s College London, UK), and a PhD in planning for resilience from the University of British Columbia. Lily brings over 20 years of experience in government, NGOs, media, Indigenous communities, and international organizations in Europe and North America. She is the Program Director for the Preparing Our Home Program, which empowers Indigenous youth leadership in community resilience.

She is working with Dr. Ballard on developing a Youth Elder Mentorship Model in Obushkudayang (Lake St. Martin). Prior to that, Lilia’s research as a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow in Indigenous Studies at the University of Saskatchewan focused on Indigenous self-determination in evacuations, disaster risk reduction, climate displacement, and planned relocation.
Umer Abdur Rehman
StudentPhD student in the Three-Eyed Seeing Indigenous Science Research Group (TESIS) at the University of Calgary. In partnership with Lake St. Martin First Nation (Treaty 2), his research explores the relationship between the Lake St. Martin complex crater structure and groundwater systems through geophysical, hydrogeological, and geospatial approaches.
His research bridges Western Science and Indigenous Science as complementary knowledge systems, combining technical innovation with traditional knowledge to develop deeper insights into the Earth’s subsurface and its interconnected processes.

Gavin Woodburn
StudentPhD student in the Three-Eyed Seeing Indigenous Science Research Group (TESIS) at the University of Calgary. He is Kwiakah First Nation member traditionally from the village of Matsayno in the inlet of Phillips Arm, BC. His passion is in Indigenous science where he bridges, braids, and weaves his knowledges and teachings from Elders and Knowledge keepers with his Western science education.
His current research is in the field of regenerative forestry, where he is exploring how we can help a second growth forest develop Old growth characteristics faster, using Indigenous science and land management techniques that his ancestors used for thousands of years. This research is done in his community and on his traditional territory.
